Popular Beach Alternative - Atlanta

The next time a beach destination is out of the question, but the family is bent and determined to have a decent vacation nonetheless, why not try something different, like visiting the bustling, vibrant city of Atlanta, GA?

Atlanta, GA is home to a number of family-friendly attractions and amenities, such as museums, the Atlanta Zoo, and the Georgia Aquarium. In addition, The World of Coca-Cola is a fascinating look at the history of one of the WORLD’S most popular soft drinks. Mom and Dad will even get a kick out this!

Atlanta offers a variety of activities for all ages. Many of them are not very expensive, and some of the more “unusual” attractions are actually free! (This would include the street musicians, mimes, jugglers, and other colorful characters that can be found on Atlanta’s streets, especially those near certain venues).

Atlanta has a bustling downtown area, whose main focal point is the High Museum of Art. For those who appreciate a good piece of artwork, there are many current and continuing exhibits covering all areas of the art world.

Not far from downtown Atlanta are neighborhoods which have a life of their own. Mid-Town and Little 5 Points are two such areas. In addition, the more upscale Buckhead neighborhood is located just minutes from downtown.

Surprisingly, one of the most fun and inexpensive things to do is to park at the College Park MARTA station (the one located directly across from the airport), buy some MARTA passes, and hop on a train. The cars on the trains are usually very clean, and the trip takes one through several of the outlying neighborhoods around Atlanta.

If that isn’t enough, one of the MARTA stops is directly inside the famous Underground Atlanta. One merely walks off the train, around the corner, and is in that portion of Underground Atlanta where the many shops, stores, and kiosks are located. A stroll from one end to the other will reveal many hidden treasures.
